Introduction
Edgbaston High School (EHS) is an independent school for girls aged 2-18. It comprises a Preparatory School, a Senior School and a Sixth Form. Founded in 1876, it is the oldest independent girls’ school in Birmingham.
Academically, the school has high standards. The curriculum is broad and balanced and is designed to be challenging. In the Senior School, pupils study traditional subjects, such as maths, English and history, and non-traditional subjects, such as ICT, drama and food & nutrition. A full academic report and two interim reports each academic year mean parents are kept well-informed about their child’s progress.
The co-curricular programme at EHS is extensive, enabling girls to grow in confidence as they learn new skills and develop existing ones. Available clubs include Lifesaving Club, Business Club, Graphics Club and Debating Club. In addition to this, the school arranges a number of trips each year so that pupils can expand their horizons while having fun. Recent destinations include France and Canada.
Pastoral care at Edgbaston High School is excellent. Form Tutors get to know their tutees well, meaning they are in a strong position to offer appropriate support and guidance. The school communicates effectively with parents, as this is vital for the well-being of pupils, and they hold Pastoral Clinics, which offer parents the chance to discuss any concerns they have with a member of the Pastoral Team.
Edgbaston High School for Girls: Contact Details and Admissions Process for Year 8 (12+) Entry

County: West Midlands
Admissions info: [email protected] or 0121 454 5831
School type: Independent school for girls
Open events: Throughout the school year
Entrance Assessment: An online assessment similar to CEM Select, a language paper (French, German or Spanish) and an interview
If you are interested in your daughter attending EHS, you are encouraged to visit the school to see for yourself what it has to offer. This will give you the opportunity to ask questions, meet members of staff and chat with current pupils. You can attend an open event and/or arrange a private tour. For more information, please click here.
Year 8 is not a standard entry point, so you should speak to the admissions team to find out about availability. If a place is available, you will need to register with the school and complete an application form. There is an £80 non-refundable fee for this.
Given that EHS is a selective school, your daughter will then sit an entrance exam. It will consist of the following:
- An online assessment that is similar to CEM Select.
- A French, German or Spanish test (whichever is your daughter’s main modern foreign language).
There will also be a 20-minute interview. The interview is an important part of the admissions process, giving your child the chance to speak about their interests and strengths. It will help the school decide whether your daughter is the sort of person that will thrive at EHS. A report from your daughter’s current school will also be looked at before a decision is made.
Should your daughter be offered a place, and you decide to accept it, you will need to pay a £400 acceptance fee. This fee is refunded when your daughter leaves EHS.
Edgbaston High School for Girls: Year 8 (12+) Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarships are awarded at the Year 7 and Sixth Form entry points. This means no scholarships are available to your daughter when she joins EHS in Year 8. Neither will a bursary be available to your daughter when she joins in Year 8. However, there is a Hardship Bursary, which means that you could be eligible for financial assistance if your financial situation were to change dramatically during your daughter’s time at Edgbaston High School.
Please reach out to the school if you have any questions regarding scholarships and bursaries.
Edgbaston High School for Girls: Year 8 (12+) Online Assessment
For 12+ entry, candidates will take an online assessment that is similar to CEM Select. CEM Select measures Verbal, Non-Verbal and Numerical reasoning abilities.
The Verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to reason using words and the maturity of their vocabulary.
The Non-Verbal reasoning questions require your child to solve problems using diagrams and pictures.
The Numerical reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using numbers and arithmetic.
The CEM Select online assessment has the following methods to answer questions, which your daughter may not have come across before:
- Drag and drop: this involves using the mouse or trackpad to drag and then drop an answer into the correct place on the computer screen.
- Auto-complete: this involves starting to type your answer into the space on the screen. If you start typing the correct answer, the computer will finish it for you, meaning you can move on to the next question.
- Multiple-choice: this involves using the mouse or trackpad to select the correct answer from a group of answer choices.
