Introduction

Chigwell School is a co-educational boarding and day school in the Epping Forest district of Essex. An independent establishment, it caters for students holistically, aligning its offerings with the motto Aut viam inveniam aut faciam (Find a way or make a way). Chigwell has produced a number of notable alumni since its founding in 1629, including ambassadors, a pioneering medical researcher and the founder of the state of Pennsylvania in the USA. [1]

Academic resilience and intellectual curiosity are the foundation of school life. Accordingly, Chigwell offers a varied curriculum to inspire inquisitiveness, encouraging pupils to take risks in their learning in order to maximise their proficiency in disciplines such as science, mathematics, languages and technology.

The extensive array of modern facilities enhances the learning experience, including the expansive Art, Design and Technology Centre, the state-of-the-art Walde Music School and the outstanding Drama Centre. Sporting activities are at the heart of the school’s enrichment programme. Reflecting this, the campus boasts a variety of sports amenities, including cricket nets, floodlit pitches and dedicated tennis and netball courts. [2]

Recently, an impressive 72% of all GCSE grades were in the top-tier 9-7 range, underscoring the establishment’s dedication to promoting academic excellence. A significant number of leavers go on to attend renowned universities, such as Oxford, Imperial College, Warwick, Manchester and Edinburgh, reflecting the high calibre of Chigwell’s education.

School trivia: The school hosts a variety of events, including the Howard and Mitchell Essay Competition and the ‘Meet the Future’ talks by Old Chigwellians, which are open to students across the school. Additionally, the Williams Project, a biweekly speaker society, offers a unique opportunity for Chigwell pupils and staff to learn from experts in an informal setting outside the classroom.

Chigwell School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions Process

The best way to explore Chigwell’s beautiful 100-acre campus prior to commencing the admissions process is to visit the school. An Open Morning takes place in June, allowing you and your child to take a guided tour of the facilities and hear presentations from the Head and Head of Senior School. You can also arrange a working day tour by contacting the admissions office. To learn more, please click here

If you decide that the school is a good fit, you should register your child for a Year 7 place by the beginning of December, while they are in Year 6. The online registration form should be submitted with a payment of a £150 non-refundable fee.

Please note that early registration is highly recommended, as 11+ Meetings usually take place in November. These events consist of interviews with the candidates and meetings between parents and senior staff members, during which Chigwell’s offerings and the child’s strengths and interests can be discussed.

The 11+ entrance examination is held in January and includes an online test. Following your child’s successful performance in this test, and a 30-minute creative writing task, they may be invited back to the school to attend scholarship interviews and assessments. Consideration of a report from your child’s current school will also form part of the admissions process. Results of the entrance exam are emailed and posted in February, and offers should be accepted by early March, with a payment of a £400 deposit.

Chigwell School extends Academic and Music scholarships to 11+ applicants. Academic scholarships are offered based on how well students do in the entrance exam and further assessments, which include Maths, English and group activities, as well as interviews. Music scholarships are offered on the grounds of a strong audition, and candidates must perform at least at Grade 4 level on their main instrument and Grade 2 on another instrument or in singing.

Means-tested financial assistance is available to pupils who demonstrate the potential to excel at Chigwell but whose families are unable to afford the full fees. This assistance, known as a bursary, can cover up to 100% of tuition fees based on the candidate’s financial situation. Chigwell welcomes applications from all students who wouldn’t otherwise have the means to pursue an independent, high-quality education. More details are available in the school’s bursary policy.
