Introduction

Dunottar School is an independent school for boys and girls aged 11 to 18. From its founding in 1926, Dunottar has gone from strength to strength. In 1933, it relocated to its current site after outgrowing its original location. Later, a new wing was added, and art studios and a sports hall were built. More recently, a new Sixth Form Centre was opened, which includes a café and recreation room, and a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre was completed.

Academic standards at Dunottar School are high. In 2025, nearly half of all GCSE grades were in the 9-7 range, and 72% of A-Level grades were in the A*-B range. These results reflect the commitment and expertise of teachers, as well as the motivation, hard work and resilience of the students.

The co-curricular programme at Dunottar is impressive, with a range of activities to suit all tastes. Available clubs include Beekeeping Club, Coding Club, Ukulele Club and Textiles Club. Participation enables pupils to make new friends, develop new skills and, importantly, have fun. Additionally, pupils have plenty of opportunities to go on residential trips and excursions.

Pupils benefit from a strong pastoral care system, with wellbeing a top priority at the school. A counsellor is available two days a week, and pupils can self-refer. The aim is for every child to feel valued, creating a safe, secure environment where everyone thrives.

Once you have visited, if you feel that Dunottar is the right school for your child, you have a choice between two routes:

  • Year 5 Early Offer Admissions Process for Year 7 Entry

For this route, you will need to submit the online registration form and pay the £150 registration fee by mid-January of Year 5 if you want your child to attend the Taster Day at the end of January.

Otherwise, you need to register and pay the fee by early February.

At the end of February of Year 5, your child will undertake Warrior Learner assessments, sit academic assessments, including an online assessment, and be interviewed.

Please note that a reference from your child’s current school will also be reviewed as part of the admissions process.

At the start of the summer term, while your child is still in Year 5, offers will be made. Acceptance of an offer involves filling out an acceptance form and paying a £1,000 deposit.

  • Year 6 Admissions Process for Year 7 Entry (Standard Entry)

This route follows the same process as the Year 5 Early Offer route, except that the dates are different.

The registration deadline is in early May of Year 5 if you want your child to attend the Taster Day and in September of Year 6 if you don’t.

The Taster Day will be in mid-May of Year 5, and the assessments will take place in October of Year 6.

Offers will be sent out near the end of the Year 6 autumn term.

Dunottar School: Scholarships and Bursaries for Year 7 Entry

There are five scholarships available for Year 7 entry at Dunottar School: academic, art, music, performing arts and sports. They carry a small fee remission.

Performance in the entrance assessments will determine who will be offered an academic scholarship.

The other scholarships will be awarded after further assessments to identify those with the most talent and potential in their chosen areas.

Scholarship assessments are in March of Year 5 for the Early Offer candidates and in November of Year 6 for the standard entry route candidates.

Bursaries are means-tested awards designed to enable gifted children whose parents cannot afford the full fees to attend Dunottar. Only a small number are available, and they will not be awarded to families with a combined income over £70,000.

Please get in touch with the school’s bursar for further information using the telephone number provided in the contact details.

Dunottar School: Online Quest Assessment for Year 7 Entry

The online assessment for 11+ entry to Dunottar is produced by Quest. It has two sections:

  1. Verbal Reasoning

The verbal reasoning section will assess your child’s reasoning skills and the breadth of their vocabulary using written information, such as letters, numbers and words. Questions may include identifying the pair of synonyms from two groups of words, breaking a code and working out the next letter in a sequence.

  1. Non-Verbal Reasoning

The non-verbal reasoning section will require your child to analyse visual information to solve problems. Spatial awareness and problem-solving skills are crucial for this section. Questions may include determining which group of blocks can make a given shape and what a shape will look like after undergoing a transformation.

Both sections are adaptive, meaning that questions will become more difficult if your child is consistently answering correctly. If they are answering incorrectly, the questions will become easier. In this way, all candidates will work at a level appropriate to them.

Overall scores are fair because they will take into account the level of difficulty of the questions your child answers. Additionally, scores are age-standardised.

Top Three Tips to Help Your Child Prepare for the Dunottar School Year 7 Online Quest Assessment

Here are our top three tips to help your child prepare for Dunottar’s 11+ online assessment:

  1. Read

Reading widely will broaden your child’s vocabulary, which is crucial for the verbal reasoning questions. It will also improve their reading comprehension, helping them understand each question quickly, giving them more time to focus on working out the answers. Reading is also a great way to relax.

  1. Play

There are many games and puzzles your child can play that will enhance their verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills. For example, Boggle will get your child to spot words quickly and recognise patterns, which is great for verbal reasoning. Tangrams are perfect for non-verbal reasoning because your child will have to fit shapes together to make a bigger shape, spotting patterns and thinking about how pieces can be rotated or flipped. Having fun while improving skills is ideal!

  1. Practise

Verbal and non-verbal reasoning are not subjects in the national curriculum, so your child might not be familiar with the types of questions that will be asked. For this reason, the best way to prepare for the Dunottar online Quest assessment is to practise using practice tests. Our online Quest practice tests have been developed after careful research to ensure they mirror the question types, format and timings of the actual test. As your child works through our tests, they will get quicker at answering questions accurately while under time pressure. They will also be able to use the answers and explanations provided to learn from any mistakes they make, leading to a confident and polished performance on the day.
