Introduction
Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) is a Catholic comprehensive school. It has Academy status and caters for girls aged 11-18. Fundamental to the school is its Catholic ethos, meaning the school’s approach to education and the care of its pupils is underpinned by the teachings of Jesus.
Academic excellence is considered important at SHHS. The school has high expectations of its pupils, and outstanding teaching helps pupils reach their full academic potential, leading to excellent exam results that place Sacred Heart in the top 3% of schools nationally. In 2020, the school was deservedly awarded a High Performance Learning World Class Award.
The extra-curricular provision at Sacred Heart is extensive. Girls can choose from a wide array of activities, such as rowing, basketball and dance. Taking part in extra-curricular pursuits means pupils grow in confidence and develop their social skills. Trips are also an important part of life outside of the classroom. Biology students recently went to the Azores to see the amazing vegetation there, and geography students went to Iceland to see the incredible geysers.
Pastoral care is exemplary at Sacred Heart High School. The House system gives girls a sense of belonging and because each House consists of girls from every year, older girls look out for the younger girls in their House. Additionally, the school has the Erskine Centre, which provides a safe space for girls to go when they require support.

The banding test that your child will sit as part of the admissions process for Sacred Heart High School is not a selection test, and it is not used to decide the teaching groups your child will go into when they start at the school. It is used to ensure that the school has a truly comprehensive intake.
If your child gets offered a place at SHHS, and you accept it, a Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4), Level C, will be used to determine your child’s teaching groups (setting). Also, based on performance in this exam, the school can judge your child’s progress over the academic year. The test will be taken in June of Year 6.

The CAT4 consists of multiple-choice questions that cover Verbal reasoning, Non-Verbal reasoning, Quantitative reasoning and Spatial reasoning.
⦿ The Verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using written information.
⦿ The Non-Verbal reasoning questions use diagrams and pictures. Your child will need to analyse the diagrams and pictures to solve problems and identify patterns.
⦿ The Quantitative reasoning questions assess your child’s mathematical skills and their ability to spot patterns that involve numbers.
⦿ The Spatial reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to understand how objects can move in a three-dimensional world.
