Introduction

Skegness Grammar School (SGS) is a co-educational selective secondary school that was founded in the 15th century. Originally based in Wainfleet, SGS was a feeder school for Oxford University’s Magdalen College. Today, Skegness Grammar School is located in Skegness and is still linked with Magdalen College.

The school is proud of its high academic standards and is committed to helping all pupils reach their full potential. There is a focus on knowledge—building up pupils’ knowledge by linking new material to content pupils have already covered and ensuring that students understand and remember core knowledge.

A broad range of weekly extracurricular activities means all pupils can enjoy a rich life outside the classroom, helping them grow into accomplished, confident young people. Available pursuits include debating, chess, reading and many sports. Additionally, SGS arranges an array of trips, such as a ski trip to France, a German trip to Berlin and a Year 7 art trip to the beach.

Student welfare is a priority at SGS. Pupils are all allocated to a tutor group and will spend time with their tutor, who will get to know them well and be able to offer support and guidance when necessary. Pupils are also members of one of the four Houses, which helps create a sense of belonging. Furthermore, Year 13 student leaders act as mentors to younger pupils.

Admissions Process for 12+ Entry to Skegness Grammar School

If your child sat the exam for 11+ entry but was unsuccessful and did not secure a place at appeal, they can sit the 12+ exam in early September, before the start of the academic year. This means that if they perform well in the 12+ entrance exam and secure a place, they can start Year 7 at the same time as their peers.

Should you wish to pursue this option, please get in touch with the school to register your child.

Admissions Process for Mid-Year Entry (Late Transfer) to Skegness Grammar School

If you wish your child to join SGS during Year 7 or in Years 8-10, you should email the school to ask for details about the process. Entrance exams are held throughout the year.

Please be aware that you will need to fill out your local authority’s application form, too.

Whether your child is hoping for a place at the start of Year 7 via the 12+ entrance exam or is seeking late transfer entry, they will sit the CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test). They must demonstrate that they are in the top 25% of their age group’s ability range unless they are in receipt of Pupil Premium (in which case, the required standard should be slightly lower). If more candidates meet the required standard than there are places available, the oversubscription criteria will be applied, with the following priority:

  1. Children with an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan).
  2. Looked after or previously looked after children.
  3. Children with a sibling who is currently at the school.
  4. Children who qualify for free transport.
  5. Children living closest to SGS.

The CAT4 for 12+ Admission to Year 7 and Mid-Year Entry to Years 7-10 at Skegness Grammar School

The CAT4 consists of multiple-choice questions covering four areas:

  1. The verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using words.
  2. The non-verbal reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems by analysing visual information.
  3. The quantitative reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to solve problems using numbers.
  4. The spatial reasoning questions assess your child’s ability to understand how objects move and interact in a three-dimensional world.

Scores are age-standardised, so your child will not be disadvantaged if they are one of the younger candidates in their year group.

The level of the CAT4 that your child will take depends on the year they are in when they sit the test. Typically, the levels are as follows:

Level D: Year 7

Level E: Year 8

Level F: Years 9 and 10

Please note that Skegness Grammar School uses the online CAT4 for their 12+ and late transfer entrance exam and not the paper-based version.

Preparing for the Skegness Grammar School CAT4 for the 12+ Entrance Exam and Late Transfer to Years 7-10

If your child feels ready to sit the CAT4 and confident that they will perform well, they are far more likely to be successful. We have put together the following preparation tips to help you and your child through the preparation process:

  1. Devise a study timetable that starts months before your child’s CAT4 entrance exam, ensuring study sessions are an appropriate length for your child’s age. For example, around 20-30 minutes is the recommended duration for an eleven-year-old.
  2. Encourage your child to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Eating nutritious food, getting plenty of sleep and exercising regularly will help them feel good and focus effectively when studying.
  3. Promote a growth mindset, which is the belief that our abilities are not set but can be improved with time and effort. This positive approach will motivate your child, enabling them to see that the work they put in will be beneficial and that mistakes are part of the learning process.
  4. Please provide your child with a range of reading material, as reading is an excellent way to widen their vocabulary and improve their reasoning skills and ability to interpret written information.
  5. Use our online CAT4 practice tests so that your child knows what to expect in their CAT4 entrance exam. Our practice tests accurately mirror the actual CAT4, using the same format, timings and question types so that your child can put in a polished performance on the day, as there won’t be any surprises that could unsettle them. Working through our practice tests will give your child the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and determine the areas they need to spend more time on.
