Introduction

Stonar School is an independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 2-18. It was established in 1895 and is considered to be the UK’s leading equestrian school. At the heart of its impressive 80-acre campus in the beautiful countryside of Wiltshire is its equestrian centre, approved by the British Horse Society. This equestrian centre includes, amongst other things, an indoor arena, an outdoor arena and stabling for 62 horses!

Academically, Stonar School is superb. Pupils are expected to work hard and are fully supported so that they can reach their full potential. In Years 10 and 11, pupils study for their GCSEs. All pupils will take GCSEs in English literature, English language, maths and science. They then have a wide choice of subjects to choose from so that they have a personalised timetable that reflects their interests and strengths.

Life outside of the classroom is seen as important at Stonar School. Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities so they can have fun, make new friends, develop their existing skills and step out of their comfort zones by trying new things. Badminton, cricket, knitting, photography and chess are just a handful of the pursuits on offer.

A strong pastoral support system at Stonar School means that pupils feel listened to and valued. The Pastoral Care Team works hard to be an effective source of guidance and advice, putting help in place for any student who is experiencing difficulties. Furthermore, the school embraces the Girls on Board Programme, which helps girls develop strategies to manage friendship problems.

School type: Independent day and boarding school for boys and girls

Entrance assessment: Online test (CEM Select) and interview

Year 10 is not a main point of entry to Stonar School; therefore, you should contact the school to find out about availability if you are interested in your child joining Stonar School at the start of Year 10.

If there is a place available, visiting the school is the first step in the admissions process. Open Days for the Senior School are held in May and September. Early booking is recommended as numbers are limited. On an Open Day, you will listen to a talk by the Headmaster and tour the facilities, as well as meet teachers and current pupils. Alternatively, or in addition to this, you can arrange to have an individual tour of Stonar School.

Should you decide the school is a good fit for your child, you will then need to download and fill out the online registration form and pay the £100 non-refundable application fee.

Next, your child will be invited to Stonar School to sit an online assessment (CEM Select) and be interviewed by the Headmaster. In addition to this, Stonar School will ask to see your child’s most recent school report and seek a reference from their current school.

A strong performance in the CEM Select online assessment and interview, along with a glowing school report and reference, could lead to an offer of a place being made (usually within three weeks of the assessment and interview). To accept an offer, you will be asked to fill out, sign and return the acceptance form within two weeks of the offer being made. Also, you will need to pay the non-refundable acceptance fee.

Stonar School: Scholarships and Bursaries

Year 10 is not a standard entry point, meaning scholarships are not normally available for students starting Stonar School in Year 10. The Headmaster will occasionally consider a Year 10 entrant for a scholarship but only under exceptional circumstances. You should contact the school if you have any questions about this.

Bursaries are means-tested awards that provide financial assistance to families who would otherwise be unable to send their child to Stonar School. A limited number of bursaries are awarded to candidates whom the school feels will make the most of all they have to offer and are of scholarship standard.

Stonar School: CEM Select Online Assessment

For Year 10 entry, your child will take an online assessment called CEM Select. It is a test that evaluates your child’s Verbal, Non-Verbal and Numerical reasoning skills.

  • The Verbal reasoning questions test the maturity of your child’s vocabulary, including their ability to fully understand what they are reading and make inferences.
  • The Non-Verbal reasoning questions test your child’s ability to recognise shapes and match patterns. Spatial awareness is important in these questions.
  • The Numerical reasoning questions test your child’s knowledge of mathematical concepts, their ability to manipulate numbers and their mathematical problem-solving skills.

The CEM Select online assessment has the following methods to answer questions:

  • Drag and drop: this involves using the mouse or trackpad to drag and then drop an answer into the correct place on the computer screen.
  • Auto-complete: this involves starting to type an answer into the space on the screen. If your child starts typing the correct answer, the computer will finish it for them, meaning they can move on to the next question.
  • Multiple-choice: this involves using the mouse or trackpad to select the correct answer from a group of answer choices.

Stonar School: Preparing for the Year 10 (14+) CEM Select Online Assessment

  • Using the answers and explanations provided with each practice test, they can learn from any mistakes they make and avoid making similar errors on the day.
  • They can identify any areas they struggle with and focus on those areas until they feel confident about them.
