Introduction

Located in the heart of London, alongside the picturesque River Thames and in close proximity to iconic landmarks, such as St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tate Modern, City of London School is an esteemed independent day school for boys. It was founded in 1834 and has educated a vast number of pupils who have gone on to become notable alumni, known as Old Citizens. City boasts cutting-edge facilities and offers a broad sporting activities programme, encouraging boys to represent the school in competitions at varying levels. [1]

City of London School is committed to nurturing the cohort’s ambitions to tackle contemporary academic challenges with grit. The school’s curriculum spans a rich selection of relevant subject options, including technology, languages, natural sciences and mathematics, complementing the outstanding quality of the education on offer.

The establishment’s core mission is to equip students for the ever-evolving world beyond school, and this philosophy extends to the co-curricular programme, as well. Adapting to boys’ changing interests while fostering their holistic development, City’s offering is as broad as it gets, comprising numerous clubs and societies, alongside exciting expeditions, which have included destinations such as Nepal, Cuba, Vietnam and Ecuador. [2]

To ensure pupils’ wellbeing, City organises Parents’ Forum events. These gatherings offer an opportunity for parents to discuss challenges that might impact their sons’ emotional and social development. Beyond fostering a supportive environment for parents to exchange personal experiences and insights, the school invites experts to shed light on various topics, including technology addiction, sleep patterns and overall mental health. [3]

Boasting an exceptional academic performance, City thoroughly equips students for adulthood, empowering them to apply their knowledge across diverse social and intellectual fields. The number of leavers who secure places at Russell Group universities is remarkable, ensuring that the school’s longstanding tradition of excellence is consistently upheld and widely recognised.

City of London School 10 Plus (10+) Admissions Process

Open Days for entry at 10+ to CLS are typically held in the Autumn and Spring terms. Please book your spot in advance through this page. As part of the event’s programme, you and your child will be taken on a guided tour of the facilities and meet key members of staff.

Applying for entry to Old Grammar (Year 6) includes registering, for which the deadline is in October of the year preceding entry. As part of the admissions process, the school administers a formal two-part assessment in November.

Candidates can expect to receive their results by mid-December. Those who excel in the examination will be invited for an interview scheduled in January. Please note that the quality of a report from your son’s current school will also play a role in the decision-making. Successful candidates will receive offers in February.

At City of London School, scholarships and prizes are valued at £35. Students qualifying for a scholarship or prize may also be considered for a means-tested bursary, covering up to 100% of the tuition fees.

Academic prizes are offered based on performance in the entrance examination. Music scholarships are typically allocated after an audition and interview. It’s crucial that candidates also meet the general admissions criteria. Sports prizes are available for selected students showing promise in at least two of City’s primary team sports, with an emphasis on football. Again, the general admissions criteria must be met.

The school also offers Choral awards to candidates who perform well in both an audition and academic assessments, typically taking place while the student is in Year 4. Choristers usually start their education at CLS at 10+. Please note that this award is only available to candidates who go on to successfully meet the school’s admissions criteria in the entrance examination.
