These resources have been produced by examiners with extensive experience to provide your child with comprehensive preparation in the build-up to their test. Covering the fundamental concepts and skills necessary for optimal exam performance, they ensure that students approach their assessment with confidence and a well-rounded understanding of the different modules.

We’ve also produced the following exercises, ideal for targeted practice and an efficient way to quickly improve your child’s scores in the relevant topic.

What is InCAS?

InCAS is an online assessment created by the Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring (CEM), which is part of Cambridge Assessment. It is taken by primary-aged students from Years 1-6.

InCAS is used by a wide range of schools to make decisions regarding streaming and admissions. For example, some prep schools use InCAS to gauge potential and decide which students should receive extra focus and attention when preparing for highly selective entrance exams. Other schools use InCAS as part of their direct admissions process.

The test covers six topics over a series of modules. The topics are:

  • Mathematics
  • Mental Arithmetic
  • Reading
  • Spelling
  • Developed Ability
  • Attitudes

 The modules include (amongst others):

  • Data handling
  • Picture vocabulary
  • Word recognition
  • Word decoding

What are the timings of each InCAS topic?

⦾ Mathematics – 20 minutes
⦾ Mental Arithmetic – 20 minutes
⦾ Reading – 20 minutes
⦾ Spelling – 20 minutes
⦾ Developed Ability – 20 minutes
⦾ Attitudes – around 5 to 10 minutes

Do SEN students have extra time to complete the assessment?

No, the timings of the InCAS are the same for each student. There are no extra-time allowances provided.

What should be done if there is an internet disruption during the test?

If a student experiences a connection loss during the test, they will be prompted to continue from where they left off. Any progress should be preserved, and all data will be routinely saved.

How will InCAS practice tests benefit my child?

InCAS incorporates a number of unique question types and formats that your child will likely not have come across before. For example, in some questions, your child will need to follow audio instructions. In others, they will need to interact with diagrams, testing both their memory and spatial awareness.

Our new practice tests are specifically designed to familiarise your child with the online format, style and content of the actual exam, including the unusual question formats and audio features. The timings, question types, difficulty level, instructions and layouts are designed to match those of the actual exam.

Upon completion of these practice tests, your child will feel more confident and prepared for the actual assessment.

Please note that the practice tests do not include the ‘Attitudes’ section because this part of InCAS is about your child’s attitudes towards reading, maths and school, so no practice is needed to complete it.

The relevant five sections (Mathematics, Mental Arithmetic, Reading, Spelling and Developed Ability) contain 11 modules altogether. Each module can be completed separately. The modules are marked automatically and can then be reviewed, with answers provided for every question.

Comparative statistics are also provided so you can benchmark your child’s performance against their peer group.

As well as providing great familiarisation, these practice tests will also act as a diagnostic tool, allowing you to quickly identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses so you can effectively help them prepare for the real assessment.

TEST DURATION: 11 SEPARATE MODULES WITH A TOTAL DURATION OF 1 HOUR AND 40 MINUTES
